Accommodation providers on this website displaying VisitScotland blue shields are members of the VisitScotland QualityAssurance Scheme and undergo annual inspections, which are either day visits or overnight stays. Quality advisors can arrive unannounced or by prior arrangement. Inspections are rigorous and cover items such as cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service, accommodation standards, facilities offered and food. Star grades are awarded as follows:
* acceptable
** good
*** very good
**** excellent
***** exceptional

Accommodation offering bed and breakfast (B&B), usually in a private house. A B&B will normally accommodate no more than 6 guests, and may or may not serve an evening meal.
A Guest House is usually a commercial business and will normally have a minimum of 4 letting bedrooms, of which some will have ensuite or private facilities. Breakfast will be available and evening meals may be provided.
The hotels listed here are individual in their accommodation and restaurant facilities. They range in size from small family owned to larger “coaching” hotels. All are licensed to serve alcohol and provide a range of meals.
Self-catering establishments are usually let on a weekly or longer basis. The establishments can be a small apartment to larger cottages and houses. Various services such as linen, towels, welcome food pack etc are provided.
Economical accommodation, often in multi-bedded rooms with shared facilities. Sometimes extra cost for towels, meals, use of washing machine etc.
